Streetwear Vogue - The Origin and Future of Your Favorite Fashion Style

From blending the essence of casual clothing to adopting several contemporary elements, including sportswear, music, and rudiments of the skateboarding culture, street fashion has evolved since the 1980s and has now touched the peak of popularity in terms of both inclusive and modern high fashion. The genre commonly cores on the comfortable but chic casual fashion style, including hoodies, tees, sweatpants, baseball caps, and pairs of striking sneakers. The fashion movement, once recognized as the kingdom of rappers and skaters, has come a long way and is celebrated as one of the most influential trends in history. So, how did it actually start?

 
Streetwear changed the hip-hop and punk culture with the street-hustler, skateboarding, and surfing fashion, incorporating a bit of Japanese street fashion as well, to produce a unique and stirring genre that not only inspires the youth but has successfully made its mark in the exclusive fashion industry. The concept of Streetwear emerged back in the 1970s when surfers started to sell DIY tees to promote their idiosyncratic designs and brands. The most prominent character in the emergence of this domain is the renowned surfboard designer Shawn Stussy, who first got the idea to sell his printed shirts with the same logo as his surfboards. Initially selling the articles from his car, Stussy extended his business and formed boutiques – shortly joining the fashion industry as a novel mind – and laid the foundation for Streetwear. 

Later in the 1980s and 1990s, popular hip-hop music labels started to sell merchandise of their artist in the form of tees and jackets, integrating the idea of Streetwear to hip-hop.  Those who embraced it were often the ones who created it and wore it. It was an expression of their culture and their self-expression. Later, with the addition of gangsta rap aficionados and skateboarders, Streetwear started to spread like wildfire. With the  merchandise becoming an offbeat icon, professional sports franchises like the Chicago Bulls and brands like Vans, Adidas, and Nike started to bring out some fresh Streetwear projects as well, which gave the fashion style an ultimate boost and wider influence. Soon other opulence brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Burberry started to test the waters and ultimately became humongous sellers in the Streetwear market.

Nearing the mid-2000s, the Streetwear fashion amalgamated another element, the then famous bling-bling culture, which involved wearing heavy jewelry such as flashy rings, bracelets, and chain necklaces. Once it became the new normal, popular clothing producers started manufacturing limited edition collections of the fashion style, using product scarcity as their biggest marketing approach. A few more years into the 2000s and Streetwear fashion was considered comparable to the several exclusive fashion brands and the influence started to get to the haute couture. Thanks to the birth of social media, youngsters, and influencers have since played their part in promoting Streetwear fashion. 


The primeval and modern Streetwear styles both center on a few basic elements that make Streetwear what it is. With the development of the Hypebeast culture, scarcity has become one of the fundamental aspects of Streetwear. The Hypebeast culture was all about the uniqueness of the style and getting your hands on the latest fashion releases. Streetwear screams comfort. The idea of casual oversized clothing with a sporty touch was all to provide people with the ease to do whatever they want in it. Streetwear is presented with the impression of being menswear since it encompasses bomber jackets, caps, and tees. However, the fashion trend was never restricted to any of the genders and is still in popular demand among all. The final but most significant facet of Streetwear is the peculiar graphic styles printed on the clothing pieces. The work done on Streetwear including logos, marvels of some artists, fun DIY including the explosion of multiple colors or weird-font words and phrases, all contributes to the spirit of street fashion. 


Sustainability in street fashion was another way to modernize and improve the style. It is to upgrade the sense a person dresses or carries a style. Sustainability depends on many factors, such as designs, fabric, attire, modesty, and accessories. To attain a sustainable fashion look one must wear unique designs that suit their personality well.

So where does the Streetwear fashion go from here? In late 2019, the illustrious fashion designer and artistic director at Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh talked about the future of Streetwear and quite realistically stated that it is time for the trend to die. However, about a couple of years later and here we are still with the Streetwear fashion roaring as it always was. Today, streetwear clothing is hugely popular in more than 150 countries. Its popularity has grown from the low-cost clothing produced by the young and the old. It is estimated to be worth $309 billion today. The credit goes to brands like Off-White, Union NYC, Supreme, Palace, APC, and Aries that made sure the creativity and modernism of Streetwear do not die out. Many luxury houses like Louis Vuitton and Dior have been using showing a new take on luxury streetwear  and innovative fashion shows to introduce the new arrivals. The streetwear basics including sneakers and oversized t-shirts, hoodies and jackets are still very much in the picture. Sneakers are a choice for everyone everywhere – from wearing them for sports to matching them with everyday outfits. Therefore, it is not possible to predict when streetwear will be dead. Even though it is not entirely the focus of fashion designers and brands presently, till streetwear maintains the inclusion of inimitability and hype, there is nothing that can take this fashion style down. Famous brands will keep on utilizing the same ideology and presenting it through their own elite and exclusive products. The vision may never be completely extinct, and the future might redefine streetwear and the luxury it brings for the generations to come.

On March 3, 2023, the M3F McDowell Mountain Music Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, kicked off with a fantastic lineup of musicians. The first day saw performances by Maggie Rogers, Polo & Pan, Quinn XCII, COIN, The Knocks, Hayden James, Neil Frances, Becky Hill, Del Water Gap, Neal Francis, Winston Surfshirt, Darius, Jim-E Stack, The Lagoons, St. Terrible (and the Gospel of Nothingness ∆), and Veronica Everheart. Maggie Rogers mesmerized the crowd with her soulful vocals, while Polo & Pan delivered an electrifying performance that had everyone dancing. Quinn XCII's catchy pop hits and COIN's indie rock sound were crowd favorites, while The Knocks kept the energy high with their infectious beats. Hayden James' smooth electronic rhythms and Neil Frances' soulful pop were also highlights of the day, as was Becky Hill's dynamic vocals and Del Water Gap's indie rock sound. Neal Francis' soulful and bluesy tunes, Winston Surfshirt's hip hop and R&B fusion, and Darius' electronic soundscapes were also popular with the crowd.

The impact of music on culture is profound. In the early twentieth century, the influence of music on culture was so great that it transformed the entire society. Before the 1930s, the role of popular music in society was limited to the development of a nation. Nevertheless, today, the impact of music on culture has remained undiminished. With a little imagination, one can determine how popular songs have shaped the society of a nation.
